You can submit any 3D FURNITURE model made in Rhinoceros 4 or 5 in NURBS. Shared model must be in 3DM format, under 15MB. Your model must contain attached textures and the geometry must be mapped properly. The whole folder must be delivered in .ZIP or .RAR format! Attach Rendered image as well.
All submitted models with textures must be sent to studio@flyingarchitecture.com before 15.1.2011 / 00:00 BST. You can submit as many models as you want! Every model must be submitted in separate e-mail.

It was quite a journey, wasn’t it? :) The contest started on April 15 and it’s already September… During this time you all have a lot of time to unchain the creative monster in you. Since April, you did your best and submitted final flying buildings as a real designers of the future :)

First of all, I would like to make a little announcement about yesterday’s event Symp.in and the official results announcement: Unfortunately in the hurry and a bit of stress (as you know, we are co-organizers of this event) I opened the work-in-progress version of PDF file for the presentation and the results were quite different. Not too much, but still. So this way I would like to apologize for the wrong results published, and here I’d like to show You all the true and final results. Thanks for understanding :)

For several months we fly from beach to beach in search of royal fish, but what we’ve found so far is a few shrimp. It does not mater, life goes on and the journey floats between sky and sea. Today we take off with ropes a container from the deep grey waters, it is rusty, covered with seaweed and coral, but after a few adjustments to property, it will accommodate other stateless fishermen like us. I repaired the attachments of the magnetic rings structure, it will hold better it must be, if it doesn’t we are all going to fall and the authorities will catch us. Here we are floating between sky and sea, the air has no borders, we are free as the wind.

Taking over the concept, flying architecture was for me the perfect opportunity to create an utopian fluid gesture in the sky, whereas the language would completely polarize in comparison to the rigid The museum consists of 3 hovering platforms. If you are a spectator from the city you are able to get a glimpse of the museum through the big deformed openings which perforate the platform. If you are the busy city underneath in an perspective you have never seen the urban fabric before. Finally but not least from the inside the user experiences a total fluidity path trough the exhibitions.

I propose Pod Living, mimicking floating balloons bacteria and or seeds, the world still has gravity but the pods have very little of even none.
Think of a concept like this, you don’t buy a home that is built in one place on the ground with foundations but instead you buy a pod that can move from one place to another you rent or buy a docking space in one of the skyscrapers mentioned later. From the earth there will be shafts ascending to the sky like sky scrapers that act as ambelical cords the pods can connect “dock” to these sky scrapers in either ports that are owned or rented “similar to seaports”. The owned docks will be in the area where you will work and the rented docks will be when you travel. Hopefully the pods can harness solar energy at high altitudes which can propel them in certain directions. The Pods will have a couple of floors living areas with viewing decks and all household amenities. With the best views the world can offer.
Ever heard the phrase pilots have the the best office in the world……. why not live it.

ConditionsThe aim of this contest is to showcase what are we – CGI artists & Architects – capable of. Construction rules? Urban rules? Law? Screw it! You are an artist, act like one. There is only one strict condition that must be kept – As this is Work in progress challenge, every participant must create his own thread in our Forum and post there his/her WIP images, while other participants will make comments and suggestions for possible improvements. Also, WIP images may help judges to add valuable points when deciding about the winning image ;) Your image can be an interior, exterior or a mix of both. You are encouraged to post on the Challenge forum as many WIP images as you can. Splash 2014 is over and we are bringing You a quick report, as we (me and Stefan) had an honor to be there among such a great speakers. The event gather the best CGI artists from Slovakia and Czech Republic.
Besides Corona development team (Corona for Rhino is coming next year btw!), we met many awesome artists specialized not only in Archviz, but mostly in other CGI areas, such as movie makers, VFX artists, advertising CGI artists, sculpters, concept artists, matte-painters or digital painters. We had really great time being there and meeting all these amazing people again after a year.

We spent a few days putting our presentation together - it consisted of our approach to architecture and we spent most of it talking about futuristic architecture, sci-fi buildings and our approach to visualizing it. Starting with Archigram, a bit of history, through some local czech visionary projects, to blockbuster movies like Oblivion, we made an intro to our talk. During the presenation we made breakdowns of 2 of our images - Uberport in Istanbul and Legend of the Tent in China - revealing our workflow from Rhinoceros to Photoshop.
We ended up the presentation with an invitation to our next event in Gallery of Architecture in Brno - Architecture is an Experiment which we will run together with Jiri Vitek next week. Surely, we will bring a report from that event as well, so stay tuned!
]]>If you have been in the same problem as we were, you know the pain... As we all know, it's a bit a problem to find a renderfarm supporting Rhinoceros and V-Ray. Unfortunately, most common commercial solution - RebusFarm - does not support Rhinoeros at all, so during our work on 6k renders of the skyscraper in New York City, we had to find a quick solution. Fortunately, we were able to google some options and we tried some of them. Here is the table of what we found:
We provide RenderSolve as the first solution in a list as we used this renderfarm for the project mentioned before. Rendering was fast, the cost was OK, however we struggled a bit when we had to approve the test image, as this one was ok, but it missed some textures, which were packed together with the model, but staff did not take the time to track them and reapply. We had to fix the issue in PS later on, but still - we were satisfied with the service - mostly because of their prompt responds. Yes, we needed the image ASAP!
GarageFarm might be OK when you use older V-Ray versions. I personally use latest nightbuilds, so it was quite hard to manage a render here - GarageFarm claimed they use the latest version of V-Ray, however it was not truth - so we lost some precious time when finding out the reasons behind missing lights. This was our first choice, mainly for the price, however for the final render we had to switch to different renderfarm.

The School of Architecture now has a small render farm. It uses Deadline software, along with Rhino and V-Ray for rendering.
So to sum it up - there are some renderfarms all over the Internet supporting Rhino. If You have any other tips, or other favorite services - don't hesitate to let us know, so we can add them to the list :)
]]>After quite a long time of "inactivity" with FlyingArchitecture, we are back. And I really mean it. For the whole time, while You haven't seen any updates to the website, there was a team in the background working really hard, hidden, secret, preparing something unseen... We have been working for half a year on something what was unveiled just yesterday. With all the glory, fanfares, sparkles. Welcome, our new-newborn :)
FlyingArchitecture was launched in 2008, by uploading a very first 3D model to the website. Since then, it became my passion. I was so much motivated by sharing my stuff that I sacrificed every single day for couple of months just to creating and sharing. I haven't seen any response, I haven't read any opinion, or suggestion, I did not get any support message... as at that time, nobody knew FlyingArchitecture. Established websites even rejected my offers for cooperation and I received emails underestimating FlyingArchitecture's mission... But I did not give up. I had a dream that one day, I will create a place offering all features to all students or professionals on the planet (using Rhinoceros as a modeling software) they will ever need... So I kept living my dream and I kept working and working. And working. After couple of weeks, a few people noticed my effort and offered me some of their free 3D models! I was so amazed, that someone liked what I was doing! Thanks to these gentlemen, FlyingArchitecture database grew up even faster. Thanks Leo, Thanks Rendy, Thanks Jan.
During these years, hundreds of people contacted me by sending nice and cheering emails.I am so much thankful to all of them, every single one made my day better and each of their responses gave me the power to keep going. And tens of them even shared their models with us, to support not FlyingArchitecture itself, but the community of people just like them! All of these people created an amazing network, a working machine, a powerful family sharing the knowledge. And there's nothing better than a working team, right? :)
In despite of undeniable success of the FlyingArchitecture back those days, I felt unsatisfied. I felt I can do even better, I can enhance it to make it the top class website for 3D models. I tried a few times, each time I enhanced the front site (the design), but keeping the backsite the same - as I used a blogging platform to manage the whole thing. I was dreaming each day of having a fully professional solution (which costed money, of course), which I could not afford. But I didn't leave the dream.
In the spring of 2014, we got into the state that I started thinking about the new website again. Seeing growing visitors statistics, I decided this is the right time to come with the portal, the platform where all of us could meet, chat and share. One day I just picked up a phone, called several webdesign and we development companies and decided to pick one until the end of the week. I am a bit impulsive, I know. :)
So this is how it happened. The first step was done and I knew wooohooo... it's already happening!!! Sounds like a drama now, but that's exactly how I felt :)
...are actually something we did not had to do, but we dedicated it all our time outside the bed ;) We worked our keyboards and mice off to bring you the experience across all devices and platforms, so feel free to check this page on your smartphone, tablet, laptop and large screen PC :) Amazing, isn't it? Kudos to our programmers :)

The best of the best were hired to do the job, as everything had to be perfect! This way, I would like to thank to the team of Martin Haviar and Martin Grega for doing such an amazing job - they were able to cuddle with each bit and pixel to create such an amazing masterpiece :) Thanks also to the FlyingArchitecture team - Jitka, Štefan, Lukáš and our interns Lenka and Martin. They did an unbelievable job over the summer and handled millions of tons of work - from rerendering every single 3D model and material, to writing tens of new tutorials, which you can already access!
Even if we just made the big step forward for mankind, we are not stopping... not even for a second. This step was just the first step in the life-long marathon! So hold your hats, ladies and gentlemen... this will be a ride :)
... I have to thank you all for your infinite support, for your hours, days, months and even years spent browsing on our website, which gave us the ensurance that what we do, we do it right. I am pretty sure you are very satisfied with V-Ray for Rhino too. It's the best render engine so far, capable of covering all visualizaiton fields we might need. I am personally very satisfied with the amount of possiblities it gives me, however... however sometimes I am sad, as we still miss some basic features other platforms do support.
This way I would like to encourage you all to help us to spread the word and to create a list of missing features, we would like to see in some of next major releases of V-Ray for Rhino. ]]>On September 18, 2016, I was preparing a presentation for Splash in Prague (an international conference for artists from archviz, CGI, VFX and other industries). At first I was really unsure what to show. I didn't want to make just another presentation showcasing our best projects. Let’s face it, even though it would probably be nice to look at, in the end it would still be the same old boring self-promotion... So, if not our best images, then what to show?
Then it hit me: Do the OPPOSITE: Show them the worst of the worst!
And that’s just what I did. I showed some of our worst images ever. No joke. For the presentation, I grouped the images into 10 different categories, or better said: rules. The feedback from after the presentation was so positive that I decided to make an article out of it, so that even more people can learn from it. So here goes:
When your client asks you to make the camera angle wider... and wider... and wider... wanting to capture the whole interior and, if possible, even the exterior in a single image, you know something is wrong. They pay you per image, so they want to get the most for their money. Artistic approach, composition, idea behind the image, and storytelling be damned! Just make it wider!
Covering half of the image with your email address and/or telephone number just isn’t an effective way to advertise or protect your artwork... it just doesn’t work. You’ll just end up distracting the viewer away from the artwork.
There are a couple ways to fail in using people assets:
Shiny happy people
Your images are full of commercial s**t, like a happy cheering crowd on a new, 50x50m concrete platform. What made them happy? Being in the image? The concrete itself? If you are going to use such happy people, give them a reason to smile. Create a story.
People staring at the photographer
Simple. Don’t show the fronts of their faces, don’t make them look at you. It just leaves the observer feeling embarrassed, stressed, confused, guilty and weird. That’s not a feeling you want your client to have. Become invisible as a photographer, don’t clue anyone into your presence. Be a ghost—an invisible, calm viewer.
Yeah, some people still use it. Fake grass using displacement, which looks artificial, unrealistic and odd. You have tons of realistic 3D asset resources online—learn how to use them.
Have you ever seen transparent people, trees or a ghosted neighbouring house? My guess is no. This is a common sin among many architecture studios, using 50% transparency for trees in front of their building, so they don’t conceal their creations. And you, as an artist, are supposed to assist in that. Next time send them an image with the tree and one without it. Let them blend it if they want to.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Cliche, but true. Low quality assets lower the quality of the overall image: low-poly people, low-res textures, out-of-place vehicles, trees, or even white blocks for neighbouring buildings. These all detract from the image and leave it uninteresting, forgettable.
It takes just 5 extra minutes, but it’s worth it. Avoid white halo and ghosting effects. Remove border pixels and blur the edges, so the cutout fits better.
Sun direction from the back
This is a very common request for commercial projects: positioning the sun behind your back, avoiding any shadow.
Vignetting / Edge blur
Don’t misuse and go too heavy on the photographic effects. If your image isn’t realistic to begin with, effects won’t save it.
Various light sources
Use natural light, put it in a logical place and at a normal intensity. This is not something that you can compensate for in post-production.
Missing shadows
This is pretty obvious. Assets without proper shadows will just bring the overall quality down.
Always think of the color palette in advance. Combine, observe, analyze. Get inspired. Be very careful with your colour palette, as it’s the very first element the naked eye can observe. After that come detail, composition, textures, lights, but colour palette is definitely first.
Some people just want to watch the world burn…

Short before Christmas I received an email from our fan Francesca from Italy about making a surprise for their friend, if we could help them out... They said he loves Flyingarchitecture and our images we produce - so we prepared a surprise for Martino - we printed out his fav image with a hand written note :)
Shortly after sending it via post office, I received a photo of Martino, holding the poster - I think the photo speaks for itself ;)

]]>For the upcoming tutorial of Stefan, where he created a specific scene called "The Bookthief," we met over the weekend and did this photoshoot: Stefan (his stage photo is not published, but it will be... soon! It's really worth it!), Lucas (security guard reading mag), Ivan (security guard who just spotted the thief), Ninka (cleaning lady, who got pushed by running thief) and me - Matus (the running thief).

Last weekend, we managed to have some photoshoot out of the photo studio, in our apartment. Yep, quite messy and not really perfect for the lighting conditions, but we could do the job we needed to. Setting up lighting was done in kinda "redneck" style, but in the end we reached the desired effect perfectly ;)

]]>During last few years, being present on Architectural visualization market, we received literary hundreds of request to sneak-peek on our workflow, our 3D scenes and Postproduction files, which we consider being the main reason why people like our images. For many years, we tried to keep it under the hood, not to share directly our PSD files, or any other finished and full scenes. We had many many discussions over the years about pros and cons of such a big step. Open our complete workflow to anyone? Or keep there a bit of magic? After so many years, we made the decision.
The change is inevitable.
We introduce a brand new category: 3D scenes and postproduction PSD files!
What you can expect? Well, let's say it clearly: EVERYTHING. Let's have a look at it:
The scene above was created for a tutorial, where we shared not only step by step tutorial on modeling, but also on postproduction. But as we found out, not everyone has the time to follow all steps of the tutorials and to learn it by following it. Some people would love to get an access to "Instant magic" - pour water in it and gets the "wow!" So here we are ;)
This scene was created a few years ago as a free time project, based on some generic Nordic references from Architizer, Archdaily and Archello. There were 2 images created: Dusk scene and daylight scene, both of them are now available in our store with fully layered PSD postproduction files.
